VENGEANCE BOOK TWO of the Meadowsweet Chronicles by Katie M. John Publisher: Little Bird Publishing House Expected Release: May 2015 About the Meadowsweet Chronicles: The Meadowsweet Chronicles is planned to be seven book series (insert nervous giggle here) although it might end up being more. I wanted to write about the things that I love; folklore, ghosts, witches and all kinds of paranormal activity. By planning a seven book series, it allowed for the scope needed to mash up all those important influences; from 1970’s classic occult films and novels like ‘The Wicca Man’, ‘Rosemary’s Baby’ and Herbet’s ‘The Cottage’, to a childhood full of Scooby Doo and later a teenage obsession with the whole American Gothic – one I am pleased to say I have not outgrown. In this way, The Meadowsweet Chronicles is a complete homage to all I love about the horror genre. Primarily set in a small sleepy English village and centring around two warring covens, (The Meadowsweets and The Ravenhearts), the arrival of the quintessential American heartthrob and naughty New York party boy brings a delicious opportunity to mix up English country folklore and fairytales with the good old American horror vibe. It’s an ambitious task, which is why each book is probably topping the 100,000 word mark, making them ‘truly’ epic in scale – but despite originally planning for each one to be around half that size and written in half the time, the weaving of such respected folklore and genre tropes has taken a lot more wordage than originally anticipated. The series sits somewhere between Young Adult and New Adult (Before the label became a byword for soft-porn LOL) The youngest character in the book is sixteen, but most of the characters are at that really complex age of eighteen and nineteen, when they have fully emerged from childhood but not quite into adulthood. There is a strong undertone of romance running through the books, because primarily that is what adult human relationships are about – trying to find a connection with somebody. In each of their own ways, the characters of the series are searching for this connection. ‘WITCHCRAFT’ (BOOK ONE of the series), sees exiled New York playboy and enfant terrible, Jeremiah Chase arrive in the seemingly sleepy ancient English village of Heargton. Jeremiah soon discovers that Heargton is far from quiet when it comes to matters of the paranormal; in fact, with its location at the very intersection of two ancient lay lines, the whole village is awash with supernatural happenings, which may also have something to do with the two warring covens that live in the village. When local college girl, Martha Paisley is discovered brutally and ritually murdered, displayed at the very heart of the village, old superstitions resurface, and eyes turn to the Meadowsweet sisters, known to have come from an ancient line of witches that have lived in Heargton for the whole 700 years of its history. But it isn’t just the bloodlines and legacies of the Meadowsweet sisters that comes into questions, as Jeremiah discovers that he is cursed with his very own legacy – one that is going to tear his very world apart. When another child is snatched from the village, it is a race against time to save her stop dark, unimaginable forces entering the world. But the Meadowsweet’s desperate battle to save the light comes at a terrible personal cost. 'VENGEANCE' (BOOK TWO) explores the aftershocks of the devastating events that take place in book one. The various parties are spread as they head off to nurse their wounds and plan for their own personal vengeance. With the Ravenhearts gathering allies in Mexico, bargaining more than they’d hoped for with the High Priestess of the Southern Territories, Geavanna, Swan heads towards the sanctuary of Salem, Massachusetts and ‘The Farm’, a community of Witches who have sought escape from various persecutions. Back in Heargton, Fox struggles to cope with the raging storm of emotions over her sister’s absence and the consequences of the blood bond with Jeremiah. As much as her blossoming relationship with Will Harrington provides a welcome distraction, she is coming to realise that Jeremiah and her are linked in a way that will never be broken. Jeremiah’s blood legacy continues to torment him as he faces an internal struggle between his inner nature and love for a girl that cannot be his, and if his inner demons were not enough, he is plagued by a pair of demonic spirit children, who are being used as a pawn in somebody else’s game of power. AUTHOR BIO Katie is the London based bestselling author of the YA contemporary Arthurian series, ‘The Knight Trilogy’. She writes full time, having given up the day job of teaching secondary school level English for nearly fifteen years. She writes wherever and whenever she can, which isn’t so easy with a two cheeky Mudpuddle fairies fiddling with her keyboard and demanding that she makes fairy dens at the bottom of the garden. She lives with an incredibly handsome, funny and intelligent giant, who she met during her school days, and just sort of hung around ever since. She always writes to music and likes to have a regular supply of Jaffa Cakes on hand. Aside from writing, her other passion is cooking (well eating would be more accurate, but they kind of go hand in hand) and when she isn’t busy being mother, author, wife, English tutor, editor, social engineer and fighting dragons, she likes to do a bit of food blogging. Her favourite place on the planet, is anywhere with her family in their campervan Ruby – any beach will do. OTHER WORKS Katie is best known for her series, ‘The Knight Trilogy, a contemporary reworking of Arthurian legend and grail mythology. She is also the author of the stand alone Gothic Detective Fairytale, ‘Beautiful Freaks’, which is “like Sherlock Holmes meets the Grimm brothers.” Her novel, ‘When Sorrows Come’, a New Adult modern Hamlet, is her only work so far without a paranormal twist. She is the author of several short horror stories, which have featured in various anthologies. She also writes poetry and shorts, just for fun, and more of those can be found on her smashwords page.
